Student Story of the Season
Kang Yang
After I finished my Chinese accountancy studies in China, back to few years ago, my mum decided let me go to a foreign country to have a look, to try a different life style and make some new friends. I was kind of like a loner at that time - but I am good son - so I listened to what she told me and I came to Ireland.
Well it didn't take too long time to decide - there are Chinese everywhere in the world, she wanted me go to a place with few Chinese where they speak English too; So that's why I m here now.
When I first came to Ireland, I did not start working. I was not like other young lads that leave their family and think they can do everything they want - go to pubs and nightclubs, etc.
I went to a language school everyday for the first six months. I had learnt some English at school in China but of course it was totally useless at the time - nobody speaks a foreign language in China daily - so I forgot nearly everything and started learning again at almost ZERO level over here in Ireland.
After my studies, which I finished at Intermediate level in English, I started my working career in a Garage. This was after I start getting to know the local people and the local culture. However, I realized that without a good local education I wouldn’t get a good job, so I went back to school again - I chose Business Computer Training (BCT) as my further education school in Ireland.
The time I spent in BCT was good - a completely different study experience compared to my past time in China. There was good hardware, where each student can have their own computer, a free library opened to all, or flexible time for your own study.
The teachers are like your friends more than like your teachers, this was all were like a fresh start for me. At the holiday time, I travelled around Ireland on my be-loved motorbikes, which are totally banned in Chinese cities. Ireland has a long history of motorbike culture, like the famous North West 200 race. The Irish love their bikes and so do I.
I'm in the Advanced Diploma course in Information Technology at the moment - which will take me a further year to study, I already can't wait to finish all my courses now. I may set up a small business of my own. Of course I'll miss the time I spent in BCT it's already become a part of my life.
